Screen your airway

If you are suffering from type 2 diabetes, take note: You have a 50 percent greater likelihood of asthma than people who don't have diabetes.

This was the add-insult-to-injury finding of researchers who looked at the medical records of veterans hospitals. They reviewed two groups. In one group, there were 293,124 patients who had type 2 diabetes. This group was then compared to a second group of 552,623 patients who had high blood pressure but were not diabetic. They found that in the diabetic patients, 4.5 percent of them had asthma, while only 2.9 percent of the nondiabetic group had it.

If you have type 2 diabetes and are having any respiratory problems, make sure to have your doctor screen you for asthma.

There are times when medical news is too urgent to wait until the next issue, so Dr. Alan Inglis keeps in touch with you through House Calls.
