A history of thuggery

Unfounded search warrants, raids with guns pointing, intimidation tactics, and seizure of property—this doesn’t sound like the workings of a democracy.

But this is a slice of the history of the relationship between the FDA and alternative medical doctors, with the FDA using the full power of the federal government to back it up.

The FDA now has a new plan.

They want to slap the classification of “drugs” on vitamins, supplements, herbs and anything else that is used in the pursuit of natural healing. Such a move would limit access, drive up costs and restrict the use of natural remedies that have been around for hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of years.

This isn’t the first assault on alternative medicine. Practitioners and organizations that are natural healing proponents have been targeted for years and years for their beliefs and work. The pharmaceutical industry—which has become the backbone of our medical system—must be feeling mighty threatened by these natural remedies. Unable to patent, package, and profit from them, they’ll instead settle for destroying their use.

I don’t picture natural healers as being menacing thugs who are threats to society. But that’s exactly what some of them have been treated as, when in the past, agents of the FDA burst through doors with guns drawn. That’s exactly what happened to my colleague and mentor, Dr. Jonathan Wright. It was a completely over-the-top tactic, meant to instill fear.

Publicity from such stunts was understandably negative, so they have resorted to trying to pass laws to outright pull the rug right out from under alternative healthcare. As the saying goes—there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

The pharmaceutical companies are behind the scenes and pulling the strings. With the recent scandals over deadly drugs, the spotlight on their cozy financial relationship with the FDA, and more and more people just downright sick and tired of being over-medicated at exorbitant prices—they are intent on taking the offensive.

It chills me to think that our government—which was intended and designed by its founders to be by the people, for the people, is threatening our freedom of healthcare choice.

Folks, our freedom is being threatened—from within. See for yourself. To see more about the FDA’s guidance, go to http://www.fda.gov/OHRMS/DOCKETS/98fr/06d-0480-gld0001.pdf. But act fast—the FDA has tried to keep this quiet, but word spread like a typical wildfire and they extended the comment period to May and then closed it. Don’t let the FDA play fast and loose with your rights to natural medicine. Make your voice heard by contacting your senator or representative on Capitol Hill today. For contact information, go to www.house.gov and www.senate.gov.

There are times when medical news is too urgent to wait until the next issue, so Dr. Alan Inglis keeps in touch with you through House Calls.
