If you're not having enough sex, go to sleep

Sleep is one way to solve any sexual problems you may be having. Now, that might sound contradictory, but hear me out. At an international sleep conference recently, a sexual health specialist said that the pace of the modern world may be driving a decrease in sexual function.

Let me back up. The hectic pace we all keep has led to an increase in sleep disorders. If you're not convinced, watch TV for an hour in the morning and count how many commercials you see for prescription sleep aids. The drug companies would not be dropping that kind of advertising dough if they weren't expecting a windfall in return.

According to this sexual health specialist at the conference, there's a growing body of evidence to suggest that when you don't get enough sleep, you're actually depressing your libido. It also leads to erectile dysfunction—the other leading commercial on television with the prescription fix.

Believe me, the drug companies are working overtime to cash in on the harmful effects of our fast-paced lives. Nice for them, but you don't need to get caught in their web of prescriptions to address the obvious: The pace you set for your life is a lifestyle issue, not a "drug deficiency" issue. It can obviously lead to health problems down the road—or you may even be dealing with them now. But it's important to start with the basics, and that's addressing the choices you're making in your day-to-day affairs.

You can start by looking at your schedule. Running around like a chicken with its head cut off from dawn to dusk and your mind still reeling when you climb between the sheets is enough to disrupt anyone's sleep and sex habits. Take some things off of your plate. You're the boss! Go on—the world will still spin.

There are times when medical news is too urgent to wait until the next issue, so Dr. Alan Inglis keeps in touch with you through House Calls.
