Not everyone is feeling a pinch in their wallet

The national economy may be on its knees, but amazingly, the drug companies are still standing tall!

But they don't do it without help. Our floundering health-care system is partly to blame for why some patients are trying to make a decision to pay the electric bill or get their prescription meds this month.

A non-profit foundation states that a third of the people they helped last year who were struggling to pay their medical bills were having problems covering their co- pays. Co-pays have increased while incomes and benefits have done anything but. Some of the co-pays are now a percentage of the cost of the drug, which can really put a crimp on a family's already stretched budget.

Your doctor may not realize it, but he's also putting the squeeze on your wallet by prescribing meds that you may not truly need in the first place. Docs are under pressure to prescribe, which is why we have a nation of people who have so many medications to monitor that it has become a full-time job.

Talk to your doctor about your medications and which ones you can get off of immediately. Some may require a weaning-off period, so it's best to work with him while doing so. Many common conditions can be controlled through diet and exercise—the very things that should have been fully explored before you were slapped with an expensive prescription.

But there's no time like the present to review your meds and reassess whether there's any value to continuing them. I offer several plans for becoming drug-free in my newsletter this month. I hope to save my newsletter readers both their health and their wallets. To subscribe and gain access to my health news archives, go to www.healthrevelations.com.

There are times when medical news is too urgent to wait until the next issue, so Dr. Alan Inglis keeps in touch with you through House Calls.
