Better living—not through chemistry

There are more prescription meds on the market than ever before and drug companies are raking in billions of dollars in profits.

So why aren't we living longer?

Research shows that while some sectors of the country are seeing a bump in their life expectancy, it's not reaching other areas of our nation.

The geographical areas suffering from life expectancy stagnation or decline cover a large swath extending from the southern portion of the Midwest, down into Texas, then over and all the way up into the Appalachian region. Researchers used four decades' worth of statistical data that includes mortality and population by county.

One researcher remarked that when life expectancy begins to decline, it's a sign of the health and social systems failing—more commonly seen in third world nations. That's clearly evident—look at all of the "epidemics" our country now sports.

The data showed that diabetes, heart disease and cancer—all of those age- related chronic, degenerative diseases that currently plague our society—are taking their toll. We eat the junk that Big Food packages and sells cheaply. Big Pharma waits at the other end of the corridor with their catcher's mitt wide open for the negative health effects of those products to catch up with us. You may think you're saving a little on the junk products at the beginning of this cycle (Extra large soda only 49 cents more!), but the cost sure does get you in the end.

Better to make lifestyle changes starting today—because, as many parts of the nation are seeing, you can't count on Big Pharma and Big Food to look out for you
