There’s a popular cholesterol drug that comes with a crazy price: It costs close to six grand a year
That can bruise your wallet (even with insurance if you have high copays and/or high deductibles).
But there’s something even crazier than the price…
It’s the fact that this drug keeps getting expanded to MORE patients… despite the fact that NO ONE needs it!
The FDA just gave the “Okay” for the cholesterol drug alirocumab (aka Praluent) to update its label with a flashy new sales pitch. They’ll now be allowed to market the drug as a modern medical miracle, claiming it can prevent… well… just about everything.
The new label will claim the drug can cut the risk of heart attack, stroke and all other major cardiovascular events.
Who would turn down an offer like that???
ME, that’s who!
And when I’m done here today… I bet you will, too!
The WRONG approach to cholesterol
The injectable drug is part of a class of med called PCSK9 inhibitors. They work with statins to bring LDL cholesterol levels down to shockingly low levels.
And if you believe that lower is always better, then I’m sure that sounds just great.
But as you’ve read right here in House Calls, that’s a gross oversimplification of cholesterol and its role in your body.
LDL isn’t your enemy, as the mainstream claims.
You actually NEED a certain level of it.
In many cases, especially here in the age of cholesterol meds, the real problems begin not when LDL is too high… but when it’s TOO LOW!
Earlier this month, one study even found that low levels of cholesterol in women can increase the risk of a stroke.
It didn’t link the risk to any specific drugs.
But most people don’t hit those ultra-low levels with diet alone. They take meds – meds they’ve been told will save their lives.
Instead, they could get a stroke.
Friends, don’t get sucked into this system yourself…
Your LDL level by itself is practically useless, and any doctor who relies on that number alone to make treatment decisions simply isn’t keeping up with the science.
Particle size and LDL oxidation are even more important– and the best way to stop the damage of that oxidation isn’t with a drug that targets LDL.
It’s with a natural therapy such as astaxanthin, which fights the oxidation so the LDL particles won’t damage or stick to your arteries, giving you real protection without the risks… and without the high price, too!
